This Is The Best Way To Remove Makeup

We can all agree that taking your makeup off after a normal day feels therapeutic, but after a night out? Not so much. And most of us have learnt the hard (and spotty) way that sleeping in makeup comes at a cost, since proper cleansing means fewer breakouts, better hydration, and smoother texture.

So forget the dusty, dull, next-day complexion. With the most effective removers and a step-by-step guide from Glow Up Season 6 winner, Shania Parris, your post-night-out routine might finally feel easy. She’s sharing her top tips and favourite products to help you wake up with your glowiest, cleanest morning skin yet.

The Best Way to Remove Makeup

The answer to the best way to remove makeup isn’t a quick wipe of makeup wipes. The most efficient, and deep cleaning way to remove makeup is by following a double cleanse routine and then going in with a dedicated gentle but effective exfoliator.

Shania told us why she swears by double cleansing and its benefits: “Firstly use an oil based cleanser, as this will melt away the makeup and break down any build up of oils sitting in your pores. Follow this with a gentle foaming cleanser which will remove any residue and thoroughly clean the skin. I promise you won’t regret adding a double cleanse into your routine.”

Step 1: First cleanse

Firstly, go in with a cleansing balm, cleansing milk, or cleansing oil. Rather than a quick wash, you should gently massage the makeup remover into the face using circular upward motions for at least 60 seconds. Before washing off, wet your hands and massage the cleansing balm into your skin once again to emulsify the formula and allow the product to more effectively break down any stubborn makeup and SPF by penetrating deeper.

For an ultra-gentle cleanse, our very own Chamomile + Oat Lipid Cleansing Balm leaves skin clean, comfortable, and nourished, which is why Shania told us “it’s my favourite makeup removal product.” Wipe away any residue with a reusable cleansing pad before moving on to your next step.

Step 2: Second cleanse

A second cleanse ensures your skin will be deeply cleaned, not just on the surface. It penetrates into skin to unclog pores and remove makeup and impurities your first cleanse hasn’t. By clearing your pores more effectively, you’ll reduce the chance of breakouts and with time, you should notice a brighter, smoother complexion depending on your skin type. But every skin type can benefit from double cleansing with a gel cleanser or water-based cleanser.

Shania told us that “removing your makeup correctly will allow your skin to breath, and a double cleanse routine will remove even the most stubborn makeup and break down any oils and bacteria that have built up during your busy plans. This will keep your skin in tip top condition ready for your next party.”

Step 3: Exfoliate

After double cleansing, exfoliation helps to lift away dead skin cells and clear out any remaining impurities, leaving your complexion smoother and more even. Using a chemical exfoliant is the gentlest and most effective way to keep skin bright and pores decongested, especially if you wear makeup regularly. Apply your chosen exfoliating toner or pad across the face using light, sweeping motions, focusing on areas where texture or congestion tends to build up.

Start with a few times a week and adjust based on how your skin responds. With consistent use, you should notice clearer pores, improved radiance, and a softer base for the rest of your routine. Always follow with hydration, and don’t forget that exfoliation increases sun sensitivity, so SPF is a must the following day.
